Renovating a space is often painted as a glamorous transformation— a fresh coat of paint, sleek new fixtures, and a picture-perfect final reveal all wrapped up within an hour episode or maybe a quick one-minute reel. But behind the scenes, even seasoned designers face hurdles, surprises, and moments of doubt. The journey of renovation is as much about problem-solving and resilience as it is about beauty and style.
You’ve seen her star turn on our website and social media, but now we’re excited to formally introduce our latest showstopper: “Jolie Brise,” a deeply personal project brought to life by Stil James’s creative director and founder, Natalie Owens. This home tells a story close to her heart—and her journey offers a candid, no-frills look at the realities of renovation. Her experience highlights why having a trusted professional by your side can make all the difference between chaos and clarity.

Necessity, Creativity, and a Bold Makeover
Natalie’s own renovation was born out of necessity—functioning in a tiny 300 sq ft kitchen with three kids doesn’t exactly scream relaxing hosting. She saw the project as an opportunity not only to expand the space but to infuse it with the personal style and bold choices she had championed for her clients for years. From a vibrant color palette to custom arches and textured stone, her home became a literal love letter to her family’s needs and personality.

Inspiration to Reality.
Expect the Unexpected—Surprises Are Part of the Game
Every renovation comes with its surprises and for Natalie’s project, this was no exception. Obstacles emerged early—pesky bulkheads, tricky plaster walls, and the need to get creative with angles and arches. Those pesky obstacles could have derailed the project, but Natalie’s background in design and construction helped her stay calm, pivot gracefully, and even turn surprises into upgrades. When external permitting shifted her original plan—initially hoping to expand outward—she embraced the change and created a brighter, more functional space at the back of the house, with better light and flow.

Preexisting layout versus where they ended up.

There were around 15 to 20 different iterations—initially aiming to expand outward to the right, then pivoting to expand toward the back of the house onto the exterior deck. The search was about discovering what truly worked for her and her family. At our firm, layout is a cornerstone of good design; we rarely move forward until we’ve nailed a plan that feels both incredibly functional and fully captures our clients’ wish list. It’s a process of refinement, ensuring every detail supports everyday living and long-term joy.
It’s a Cliché but… Knowledge Is Power
Natalie’s deep understanding of both design and the technical aspects of construction made navigating delays, pushbacks, and problem-solving second nature, which ultimately helped her stay calm when challenges arose. It’s inevitable in a large scale reno at some point they’ll be a bump in the road, but she states: “The key thing to remember, is there is ALWAYS a solution. Sometimes it can’t happen overnight, or it needs a new brain on it to work through, but there is typically always a fix if you have a great design foundation to begin with.” She also advocates for homeowners to trust their entire team—because those finer details, the hardware, fabrics, and finishes, are often what make a space truly memorable. “Invest in quality,” she emphasizes. “Nobody ever regrets upgrading to something stunning—it’s those details that stand the test of time.”

Make Sure You’re Heard
Listening to intuition was a game-changer. Moving the mudroom from the conventional front of the house to a more functional back area didn’t just make life easier—it transformed her daily routine. This experience reinforced a key lesson: question conventions she urges “gone are the days of the formal sitting room, or the square dining space with the antique table,” shake up layouts, and prioritize how your family truly lives, not what trends dictate. “Designing for your life,” she says, “means being willing to disrupt tradition for practicality and purpose.”

Empathy, Patience, and Trust
Renovations are emotionally taxing. Natalie’s experience has deepened her empathy for clients, “I was really feeling for people who don’t know this construction world well and take on a Reno. How scary that must be, and how much trust you need to have at the team who is executing on such a personal & expensive asset.” She recognizes the emotional toll and emphasizes the importance of trust, patience, and communication. During her own reno, moments of doubt—wondering if the effort was worth it—were replaced by the joy of creation. The most rewarding part? Watching her family enjoy their new space, particularly seeing her father indulge in the comfort of his favorite nook—those are the rewards.

Here’s the truth: even interior designers—masters of aesthetics— aren’t immune to the stress, surprises, and tough decisions that come with renovating a home. But with a clear vision, a trusted team, and a calm approach, those challenges become opportunities to craft spaces that are as meaningful as they are beautiful.
Whether you’re dreaming of a chef-grade kitchen or a complete overhaul, remember: professional guidance can turn daunting obstacles into stunning successes. The journey might be unpredictable, but with patience, trust, and a good dose of resilience, the process becomes just as rewarding as the result.
