“A budget is more than just a series of numbers on a page; it is an embodiment of our values” – Barack Obama
Welcome to the second month of the new year! As we continue to pursue our resolutions—perhaps even ticking off a goal or two—you might be considering a renovation or a gradual home makeover. Perhaps you’re ready to embrace a fresh coat of paint or dare we say, ready to invest in that dream sectional? This article serves as your go-to guide for navigating furniture shopping with confidence. Let these five simple steps be your trusted companion, easing any apprehensions and helping you create the space you’ve always envisioned!
Step One: Craft a plan… and stick to it!
Our biggest piece of advice is the benefit in planning for the long term. Envision where you want to take your space and holdfast to it! It’s like planning a gallery wall, it’s easier to map out your wall once you have all the pieces. Try to avoid buying for the sake of buying because you want to finish off the room, trust the process it will all come together in due time – we promise!

Step Two: Do your Homework
If you’re planning on taking the leap… don’t take it blindly – do your research! Research looks like several things: online browsing to see what the stores are carrying and their price point, taking to social media to see some of the styles your favourite designers are using! Starting an inspiration board is a great start too, make sure to pay attention to the little details, like if that sofa has a rolled or straight arm, is it a three-seat sofa or two? If you have extra time, it could be a great idea to build out a room layout to see how all the pieces come together!

Now, this may not be where your head goes but our brains instantly go to a floorplan! Yes, it’s important that your pieces look cohesive but it’s crucial they fit functionally within the space. We map out floorplans for large scale renovations and small furniture upgrade projects. Seeing it in a bird’s eye view allows our clients to walk through and understand the flow of the room, how they’ll function with this new layout and of course, if there are any pinch points that need to be remedied.

Sometimes you need a visual for other things besides furniture, like art! Here’s an example of a gallery wall we built for one of our clients!
Step Three: Function over Flattery
As touched upon, while aesthetics undoubtedly matters, the functionality of a piece in your home is equally important! Consider how you will interact with the item and its role in your daily life. For instance, a more affordable sofa may tempt you, but a sectional could offer enhanced seating and comfort. Prioritize function and lifestyle over mere cost; making the right choice now can save you from dissatisfaction in the future.
Functionality also extends to materials. Think about whether features like removable slipcovers are important for easy washing. If you prefer upholstered styles but dread spot cleaning, consider innovative fabrics such as Crypton or Sunbrella for their durability and ease of maintenance. Emphasize longevity by understanding how the piece will wear over time and familiarize yourself with care instructions to ensure your investment remains a source of happiness for years to come!
Step Four: When spelling Furniture does it have a $?
This step aligns with our initial approach—being mindful of your expenditures ensures that you feel confident in your choices. Whether your budget is $1,000 or $10,000, consider these pieces as investments in your style. Avoid letting sales dictate your decisions; if you discover something you love, be patient and wait for a better price!
Don’t stress about your current space and its arrangement; remember, great design is a long-term journey that can evolve over time. If you need support along the way, here are a variety of design assistance options you might want to consider incorporating into your budget!
