“There’s no place… like your cottage”
Summer is bursting at the seams, and nothing beats the irresistible charm of a cottage. In the Maritimes it’s a celebration of laid-back luxury, where the charm of coastal living feels like it’s woven into every detail. But how do you craft a space that captures that breezy, coastal vibe? An elevated sanctuary, a space that feels sophisticated, yet whimsically inviting! As a design firm located in the Atlantic, we get this question all the time. So, let’s dive into the art of transforming your cottage into a timeless seaside sanctuary, infused with coastal elegance and a dash of playfulness the SJ way!
1. Fishing for Cottage Colourway
It always starts with a colour palette, and here’s a secret, you don’t have to restrict yourself to just blues or navy. You can opt for a soft, neutral colour story and it can set the perfect canvas for your seaside view or allow other accent colours to be the front runners.

Another option is to lean into a palette that pulls from the outdoors but make it softer – more serene to achieve an understated elegance. Imagine soft shades inspired by the coast or a sunset morning. These hues create a soothing environment that instantly relaxes and rejuvenates, making your cottage feel like a true retreat from the hustle. Pairing these gentle tones with subtle pops of navy or greens can add depth without overpowering the space. The goal? To craft a calming sanctuary that feels effortlessly sophisticated—and as soothing as a stroll along the shoreline.

2. Lay(-er) It on Me
Texture is always your secret weapon, a rule to live by for your main home as well as your cottage! Mix linen, rattan, and woven textiles like you’re creating a tactile symphony—without the chaos. Toss in textured throws, plush cushions, and tactile wall hangings for a cozy yet refined vibe. Natural materials like driftwood, reclaimed wood furniture, or weathered finishes instantly evoke seaside serenity—like you’ve captured a moment from the coast and brought it indoors.

Both these living rooms are great examples of layers with depth. They’re from the project Set Sail and Peninsula Paradise, two cottage retreats located in Chester. There is not only a mix of different materials but also a playful colour palette that feels cozy, playful yet elevated.
3. Bespoke(-to-me) Decor with Maritime Charm
Decorate with intention—pieces that tell a story, charm with history, and inflect your own personality in each space. Mixing old and new like antique pieces with new lighting or handcrafted pottery with fun glassware—each special piece adds to the overall story you’re painting. Keep it curated and refined; less is more when it comes to sophisticated charm.

Speaking of telling a story, don’t forget the power of artwork—sea-inspired scenes or abstract ocean motifs can anchor your coastal aesthetic. But just like décor, pick art with intention, you don’t have to restrain yourself to seaside art. If it speaks to you and brings you joy, consider the overall colour palette and if it works, it can serve as the perfect captivating focal point!

4. Relax, Get off your Feet & Have a Seat
Your cottage should be as comfortable as it is beautiful. Invest in furniture that combines form and function—a crisp upholstered armchair for lazy afternoons, sleek coffee tables for island gatherings, and outdoor seating that makes sunset cocktails an art form. Elevate the look with luxe details like statement lighting fixtures or playful textiles—every element working in harmony to craft a space that’s both stylish and practical.

A statement chair not only in design but colour and use of textiles. It’s made for lounging, coffee in hand and a book close by… all while making an impression!

Again, practical use of textiles but the use of colour and pattern is intentional and impactful.
5. No Life Jacket
Cottage life is your playground—so don’t hold back! Get creative, push boundaries, and embrace the unexpected. Your summer escape should reflect your personality—so take risks, add that splash of bold color, quirky decor, or offbeat accessories. This is your chance to have fun and create an environment that’s lively, unique, and full of personality—beyond the usual.

This summer, let your cottage become more than just a haven—it’s a canvas for your creativity, a playground for your personality, and a true reflection of the spirited coastal lifestyle. Whether you’re dreaming of breezy lounge nooks, inviting maritime accents, or a splash of unexpected colour, the key is to blend effortless elegance with a bold dash of fun. Remember: your cottage is your sanctuary—so don’t be afraid to push boundaries, experiment with textures, and make it uniquely yours. Here’s to celebrating the magic of seaside living, where every detail embodies the timeless charm of the Maritimes with a modern, playful twist. We’re excited to help you elevate your space into a little piece of heaven—designed by your dreams and styled with joy!
Wishing you a beautifully breezy August,
