We recently did an Instagram roundup of the most popular design trends we are seeing in 2024! There’s the good, the bad and the…somewhat controversial (did someone say wood paneling is back in?).
PAINTED TRIM
Our take: Love it just don’t use grey.
Instagram’s take: Also love it (79% thumbs up).
COLOUR ON COLOUR ON COLOUR
Our take: The concept here is essentially mixing colour, prints and patterns – art, wallpaper, furniture, throw cushions, maybe an upholstered stool for good measure. It’s bright, it’s bold and it’s not for a faint of heart. And I (obviously) love it.
Instagram’s take: Also love it (79% thumbs up).
RETHINKING SUBWAY TILE
Our take: Love love love. Subway tile is a classic. You will never go into a home and feel it is out of date. The concept of taking subway tile and using an interesting lay or colour along with mixing it up with 5×5 or a trim piece will always feel like the right choice.
Instagram’s take: Loving it but not as much as me (66% thumbs up). WE WILL CONVERT YOU.
BOLD STONE
Our take: Pretty self-explanatory here – strong veining on natural stone is IN. Calacatta viola is all over our feeds and it’s absolutely beautiful. I think the key here is making sure you are using it in a way that feels balanced. Some spaces are literally swimming in bold stone and while its on trend, it needs to be used thoughtfully.
Instagram’s take: Love it (71% thumbs up).
CHECKERBOARD TILE
Our take: What a resurgence of a classic trend. Straight out of Versailles to Pinterest feeds in 2024. We are fans of anything that has lasting power.
Instagram’s take: Super love it (90% thumbs up).
COLOUR DRENCHING
Our take: Colour drenching is essentially taking a paint colour and painting it on all the walls, ceilings and trim in a room. Take no prisoners. It drenches the room from head to toe in (usually) a bold unexpected colour. This is great for creating an instant mood. I like this in a way I like the bold stone trend – with the right colour in the right space it works magic. When it’s done less thoughtfully it can fall a bit flat.
Instagram’s take: Love it (83% thumbs up).
WOOD PANELLING ON WALLS
Our take: This one took me by surprise! It’s kinda…80’s? And not a lot of trends from the 1980’s see a second lifecycle. I think in a high end home this is shockingly beautiful. If you are not going to spend ten of thousands of dollars to get this trend right, I’d say sit it out.
Instagram’s take: Ohhhh finally some controversy (51% thumbs up).
ARCHES & CURVES
Our take: A friend the other day asked about the “Stil James arch” aka we love arches, a lot. This is another trend that has been around forever and can feel very classic. And it’s not just arches trending, it’s curves in general. Curved sofas & chairs, round & oblong dining tables, arched bookshelves, the list goes on. Consensus: linear is out for 2024.
Instagram’s take: Love it (88% thumbs up).
MINI FLUSH MOUNTS INSTEAD OF POT LIGHTS
Our take: This is a fun one! I like it. It’s a new take on the boring cheese light. Designer’s are typically not fans of pot lights, though we concede because they do serve a purpose. So a way to re-think the need for pots is a win in our books.
Instagram’s take: Unsure (52% like it).
KITCHEN ISLANDS THAT LOOK LIKE FURNITURE
Our take: 100% yes.
Instagram’s take: Almost 100% yes (96% thumbs up).

I’m obsessed with your design of the blue tile powder room. We are wanting to jazz ours up. Where is your favorite locally sourced tile (Halifax / NS ). Definitely would love to explore non subway tile.
Love the Inta and the blog
